PRESS RELEASE from RCT Council Leaders: Major endorsement from Labour in local government for Hart campaign
Cllr Russell Roberts, who is Leader of the largest Labour controlled Council in Wales, Deputy Leader of the WLGA and Leader of the WLGA Labour Group is placing his support behind Edwina Hart in the Leadership contest to replace Rhodri Morgan.
County Borough Councillor Russell Roberts, Leader of the WLGA Labour Group and Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taff Council said:
“For me Edwina is the only choice to lead the Welsh Labour Party and Wales.
“She *is the candidate who has* held some of the most important portfolios in the Assembly Cabinet since 1999.
“For me Edwina is the only candidate who can demonstrate the ability to lead change and deliver better public services.
“Her work with the trade union movement throughout her career demonstrates her socialist credentials above all the other candidates.
“She has delivered tangible and meaningful change to the National Health Service and in my time as Chair of Cwm Taf Trust impressively steered through abolition of the internal market and the reorganisation of the trusts and Local Health Boards. No other candidate can point to such achievements.
“Edwina will provide a strong voice for Wales & Local Government. In her time as a Minister, especially, when responsible for Local Government, Edwina recognised the needs of Valley communities and the Labour heartlands, she is a deliver and gets the job done!
“I urge all Labour Councillors in Wales to back the Hart campaign, as this will ensure a strong voice and future for the important public services that Councils provide.”
Edwina Hart’s bid to succeed Rhodri is already, at this early stage of the campaign, being backed by four other Senior Cabinet Members in Rhondda Cynon Taff, the majority of the Council’s Cabinet, which includes the Council’s Business Manager, Cllr Clayton Willis (Tynant), Education Cabinet Member Eudine Hanagan (Tonyrefail West), the Cabinet Member for Communities, Cllr John David (Tonteg) and the Cabinet Member for Economic Development, Cllr Paul Cannon (Ystrad).
